GWHFC Truck Receives a Much-Needed Overhaul: Funded Fall 2007

The magnificent "new truck" of The Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition is part workhorse, part sentimental possession, part moving billboard -- and, even with the very real intervention of The Satterberg Foundation two years ago, part mirage.

As of August, 2007, the truck... needed a new motor, new brakes, new rear lights, a new windshield, a new driver's seat, and, if we could manage it, a new paint job to take care of some years of graffitti all along one side of it. We also needed six new tires. And thanks to The Satterberg Foundation just eight months later, what had become a pretty homely and a not-so-reliable caterpillar of a truck -- something some of us weren't so sure we wanted to be seen in the company of -- emerged as the best looking and the most provocatively adorned large steel butterfly on any city street for miles around.

In its former incarnation we noticed that most people averted their eyes when it passed. Now everybody pays attention -- everybody strains to read what is imprinted on the sides and on the back -- and when they do we as volunteers, both drivers and passengers, look out at them and beam and beam. We are on our way to do ... the people's work, and we are glad that everybody knows what we're up to as we drive by.
