Puget Sound Explorers Hold Class on the Water: Funded Fall 2008

The Puget Sound Explorers (PSE) programs address the lack of opportunities by youth to directly experience the maritime world of Puget Sound and Admiralty Inlet.

PSE promotes teamwork, pride, and a sense of community responsibility for youth, while engaging them in traditional and contemporary maritime activities. Curriculum at all grade levels was developed in partnership with teachers from public schools, WSU Curriculum Specialist Pam Roberts, and NWMC staff.

"I saw an intelligence in the kids that I wouldn't have seen in the classroom. I saw strengths in the students on the boat that gives me added tools for working with them in their school work." -David DiPrete, Chimacum Language Arts Teacher

In fact, the impact of the program was significant enough for the teachers of Chimacum Middle School to request the program-which had originally taken place in the spring- be held in the fall so that the benefits reaped by the students could have an effect on the rest of the school year. Teachers noticed a change not only in the students, but in their perceptions of them as well.

The NWMC staff and school district staff function wall as a dynamic teaching team. Licensed Captains and experienced maritime educators, they are able to tag team off each others' ideas, and provide a safe and fun learning experience for the students.
